Day 12: The Real Colonel Bogey
July 11th, 2011
As one of the most popular musical marches of all time, the ‘Colonel Bogey March’, composed in 1914 by Lieutenant F.J Ricketts, has gone on to inspire all manner of rallying cries, not to mention crude playground lyrics and an important golfing term.
Lieutenant Ricketts (1881- 1945) was a British army bandmaster and he went on to become the director of music for the Royal Marines, based in Plymouth. The inspiration for his most famous piece came following a series of encounters with a somewhat forceful field colonel, whose real name remains unknown, but whose nickname was Colonel Bogey.
This year, there will be 156 players competing for a £5 million prize fund, which indicates just how far the tournament has come. The global popularity has soared thanks to legendary players such as Walter Hagen, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, the late, great Seve Ballesteros, the global superstar Tiger Woods, and latterly the prodigious talent of Rory McIlroy.
